Vice President Kamala Harris easily won Maine’s 1st Congressional District, clinching the first of the state’s four electors to be awarded after Tuesday’s presidential election.
The Democrat had 66.1 percent of votes to 31.2 percent for former President Donald Trump when the Associated Press called the reliably liberal district for Harris at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday. Three third-party candidates split a small share of votes.
The result was no surprise, but it was still important. Maine awards two electors to the statewide winner. Only this state and Nebraska give one elector to the winner in each congressional district. No Republican has won all of Maine since George W. Bush in 1988.
Harris is expected to win three out of Maine’s four electors. Trump, a Republican who won the conservative-leaning 2nd District in 2016 and 2020, is heavily favored to win there again. Trump is favored to win the national election, with Decision Desk HQ giving him a 78.5 percent chance of defeating the Democrat.
